Hamster Heat Stress

Another known enemy of our pet is heat. Yes, too much heat will kill our hamster in just a few hours of exposure. Hamsters can withstand up to 30C temperature but beyond that can prove lethal. Last year alone I had 6 hamster fatalities even though I had well ventilated and shaded area. Here are some very obvious symptoms of your hamster is suffering from heat stress.

1. Their mouths are wet including their fur and it goes all the way to their neck.
2. Their stomach and bottom are wet and they are keeping it wet.
3. Very low energy during their playtime ( early night time )

It is always important to keep your hamsters cool in many ways possible. Some areas in the house can be used to keep them cool even on a summer season. Here are some tips to keep them cool.

1. During the day, you can put the cages underneath the sinks, cabinets and below the bed.
2. You can put ice and towel just outside the cages.
3. Use plastic bin cages that are very well ventilated. Glass aquariums tends to generate heat and traps it.
4. Make sure that they have enough water all the time.
5. You can add Electrolyte Solutions ( Dextrose Powder, Anti Stress Powder, Electrogen D+ or Gatorade) to your hamsters water. (Follow packaging instructions)
